On September 13, The Social Action Committee reviewed the UU the Vote effort. Members took action by joining existing “get out the vote” campaigns such as Vote Forward to write letters to voters in swing states. The letters focus on why voting is important, instead of urging people to vote for a specific candidate. Letter writers are encouraged to write about why voting is important to them. Each letter consists of a printout with room for writing, and also containing state-specific information about how and when to vote. The letters are then mailed on a specific date a few weeks before the election. People respond positively to receiving mail from a real person who took the time to address them with a personal message. Studies have shown this to be an effective way of getting people who do not usually vote, to do so for the first time.
